In the space below, explain to me what you have learned about World History up to this point. I know its been 2 whole weeks since you thought of anything, but you have to start sometime. Try to recall main ideas, or major events, important regions or significant rulers that can help you.
Write a paragraph of at least 6 sentences that explains the ideas, events or figures that made a significant impact. Try your best to be as specific as possible. Paragraph is due at the end of the period. Good Luck:)

Europe has grown through its trade and ways of organizing its people through feudalism and towns. Many new ideas and trade had been brought through wars and crusades which had a huge impact on its growth. There have been many conflicts and things changed around due to power vacuums and debate over power.

I think the major thing I learned last quarter were the maps. Learning the countries of each continent has impacted my life significantly. Whenever someone brings up a country or tells me where they’re from, I can have a better idea of exactly where they are. Another thing that I remember very well was the crusades. The crusades were a war to take back the holy land, and has affected many things that we have now, such as weapons, trade etc. I also learned about fiefs which are pieces of land within a kingdom. Each fief was ruled by a noble and the lord provided for all the fiefs in his kingdom. The crusades lead to the development of towns in between fiefs, and since they were unprotected they were often pretty unsafe.

At the very beginning of the year I remember we learned about Islam. We learned what the Muslims believe, for example the 5 pillars of Islam. I remember the pillars were praying five times a day, fasting in the month of Ramadan(I think that’s what its called), paying taxes to the church (tax’s name starts with a z), proclaiming the Ala is the one true god, and I forget the 5th pillar. I also learned that the way Islam was spread was by converting or dying, however Muslims allowed Christians and Jewish people the keep practicing their religion because Muslims believe that Christians and Jews were people of the book, meaning they believe they all worshiped the same god. After Islam we learned about the feudal system. The feudal system was the social and economical structure in western Europe at the time. The feudal system organized people into four main groups; Lords, Nobles, Knights, and Peasants. These class organized which people have the power, as well as which people have wealth. In the feudal system we learned they used the barter system, which is when you trade goods for goods. We learned that later Europe switched to the Market economy, which is trading goods for currency. The growth of currency was because the Crusades lead to a huge increase in trade. The goods brought back from the Crusades were traded all across Europe, so trading involves exchanging currency, so currency and banking grew as a result of the crusades. Then we learned about the conflict of power in the nations of England, Spain, and France.. In England the people had lots of power because King John signed the Magna Carta giving people tons of power, however in France the King had all the power. The King used many ways to get more power, and at one point a French King appointed the Pope. In Spain the King and the Church had most of the power. We have learned more things, but these are the things that stood out to me.

In the last quarter, I’ve learned about the English monarchy and all the wars, conflicts, and improvements. Some major wars were the crusades which were religious wars, these wars were used as a pass into heaven. Richard the Lionheart teamed up with two other kings, who bailed, and fought in the wars. Some improvements were in the feifs, with the amount of power with kings and nobles, and who everyone ended up answering to. A major conflict was between the kings and the church, the church had a court and took a lot of power from kings through them, so the kings took away the church court. Another religion we learned about was the Muslim religion. We learned about the five pillars of faith and how they were expected to carry them out. We also learned that the Muslims were very open to others ideas, so they came up with technological advances before most. Lastly, we learned that the Muslims believed the Jewish, Christians, and Muslims were all religions of the book and therefore believed in the same God.

Over the last quarter, we have learned multiple things. One of the most significant topics was feudalism. Feudalism is the form of government that was used in the middle ages and it had great impact. It was a system that was ruled by a lord who was in charge of the land. Under the lord were the nobles who basically had more authority than the lords because they were more involved. Under the nobles were the knights who fought for the fiefdoms and then the peasants and serfs worked for the land. Aside from that, we learned about the significance of trade that impacted many cultures. Trade spread across European and Asian countries because of the crusades which increased the trade entirely.

Last quarter we learned about the Middle East and the religion of Islam. The ‘god’ of Islam is Allah and Muhammad is the prophet, or someone who spoke to God. The people of the Middle East are known as Arabic. They spread Islam by conquering different regions and telling the people to convert to their religion or else they’d be killed. In Europe, they lived according to the Feudal system, which was a hierarchy. The lords, or owners of the land, were at the top of this hierarchy and the peasants were at the bottom. The religion in Europe was Christianity which shared the same basic idea of God as Islam. European kings also got into a lot of wars like the 100 Years War which involved European Christians fighting against Muslims to overtake the holy land in Jerusalem. Another war was the War of Roses which was a power vacuum where the rulers fought each other to gain the power. In every region, trade was a large part of the culture and economy because virtually everyone’s lives involved or were centered around trading with others.

We learned about various countries and how they divided the government and society’s power. Many systems were introduced such as feudalism, manorial system, barter system, and more. We learned which countries used each system and how more systems came to use from these ideas. For example, countries like Europe and France used feudalism and the manorial system for many years until the King’s power over the land grew. We also learned about the various wars and how they affected each country’s trade, schooling, jobs, and general ideas for inventions. Overall, learning every part that lead to the structure to countries helped us get a better understanding of our world today.

In these Chapters I learned about the Roman empire and Europe in the Middle and Dark ages. We also learned about the different religions and how they came to be. Some of the religions were Chritians, Islams, and muslims. All of these had different ways and rules to live. The Christians had very specific ways like u could not make interest off lending people money and the church was the most influential thing. The Jewish people could do this though and this is how money exchangers came to be. There were also different hierarchies. Feudalism has a specific structure and the people couldn't go between social statuses. This system was lord, noble, knights, then peasants and serfs. The church's structure was pope, cardigan, archbishops, bishops, and perish priest. There were conflicts with the church being so powerful in many ways too. We also learned about the crusades and how this lead to ideas, trading, weapons and war better increase, and politics.

We started our understanding of World History with the rise of the Roman Empire which happened due to the fact that it was a great site for trading which gave it the power to conquer and control most of Europe. At this time Christianity was also beginning to spread. Then, after the Roman Empire began to shrink a power vacuum began to form throughout Europe and Christianity was an important part of everyone’s life. Kings of different regions began to use the feudal system to control their territory and Europe falls into the Dark Ages. Europe largely consists of the feudal system for a long period of time and Christianity grows to become a very powerful aspect of all of Europe’s people’s lives. Then, the Crusades happen which allow the trade of items and knowledge to increase greatly causing Europe to emerge from the Dark Ages into a new life and many kings go to war over who rightfully rules certain thrones. At this time many of the continents “countries” are being run in different ways with different groups of people in power. England is run by the king who works with the people allowing their wants to be heard, France is run by the king who has a great amount of power over all its people, the Holy Roman Empire is supposedly run by the pope but is actually run by different kings using the feudal system, and Spain is run by the king with great influence from the church. There is a lot more important stuff that happened in between these events such as important rulers that caused them and changed many things about Europe and its people.

We learned about King Edward and King Henry the second. We learned that soft times make hard men and hard times make soft men. The Domestic System and Guilds made life easier for people who make and trade items. Jan Has was executed because she believed in something that many people didn’t agree with. Guilds are people who pay a little bit of money hoping to sell their goods. The 100 years war began and the English and France fought for the throne in France.

Islam is and was the largest relgion in the world, they used methods like convert or die to grow unless you were Jewish or Christian because they were also known as people of the book. Muslims were very open minded and their religion didn’t have restrictions on making money, which led to them becoming powerful bankers. Later, european christians decided to go on crusade to take back the holy land, which was Jerusalem, that was occupied by Middle Easterners. There were multiple of these Crusades. With these crusaders going on crusade to the Middle East, they learned many new things, especially how to trade. Trade then became huge in Europe, leading to trade routes connecting the Middle East and Europe. Then there was a power vacuum in Europe and it became divided and kings ruled Europe.

This last quarter, i learned about the different countries and continents and i also got a better perspective of not only where they took place but what took place there as well. After being in this class, i look back at myself and see how uncultured i was. I learned about the development of islam and how christianity is basically the root of every religion and was split up along the way of its growth because of the different ideas and opinions. The method of forcing religion on people or killing them was strongly used all throughout the growth of religion. Trade and new ideas also grew during the time of the crusades when coming out of the dark ages.

All the things I learned in world history from the last quarter was about how important land was and gaining land. Along with that there was a lot of fighting over land. Also I learned that kings and popes were the big people in this society. Three big systems that I learned was the Domestic system which was trading within homes, Feudal system which had to deal with ranking, and the Manorial System which was political and economic. I learned that crusading was very important within the society and there was lots of them. The economy grew big in this chapter with investing and banking.

In early european times, Rome was the biggest empire in Europe, being called the Roman Empire. After 400 years the roman empire fell. After, many other empires and leaders stepped up to fill the power vacuum that was created. These groups were always at were so they started to create their own economies; they guarded themselves off and captured areas. The leaders, known as kings, gave parts of their land to Nobles. Nobles were people whom they trusted a lot, such as family or really close friends. These Nobles then created sectioned off land called fiefs. These fiefs were their own little “towns”. They had a stable economy and relied mostly on themselves. After time the space in between fiefs was taken by outcasts or people who wanted to leave the manorial system. They created places called towns which was a lot more free and wasn’t run by a singular political leader.

The dark ages were filled with both a lack and an influx of new ideas. As the feudal system was created from fear of the chaos and war outside of the various fiefs, it burdened the inhabitants with seclusion and a loss of ideas. The main ideas that broke through the fog of ignorance were the religions. The crusades, or religious wars, allowed the Italians to create new trade routes throughout the middle east. Other ideas, such as the Magna Carta, a charter that restrained the ruling power of English Kings, came into fruition through the power of the people.

I have learned many things in World History throughout the first quarter. The first thing that comes to mind is the wars, one of the wars that I remember were the crusades. The crusades were a series of wars caused by religion within the Muslims and Christians primarily over land (The Holy Land) and wealth. Between the period of 1096-1291, there were a series of 8 major crusades. The power fluctuated back and fourth during this series of wars.

In quarter one, we learned about the rise of Islam after the Fall of Rome, Christianity and the Middle Ages, and Europe leaving the Dark Ages. The rise of Islam started following the fall of Rome through Muhammad, a merchant on the silk road. Islam spread, and eventually made it’s way to Europe. Following the fall of Rome, Europe entered the Dark Ages, a span of time when new ideas were few and far between. The Dark Ages brought feudalism, the Black Death, and, towards the end, the rise of Christianity. The rise of Christianity brought about new ideas, trade, and the Crusades, wars over religious land.

From what I can recall, I remember that we learned about how Islam began to start and build up effecting the middle East heavily. We also learned about the Middle Ages. That was a very big and long lasting period of time. During the middle ages we got to learn about the idea of Feudalism which is a social system that was used to run the Middle Ages in Europe. We also learned about how Kings came in the picture taking lots of power, and another powerhouse was the Christian Church which we also learned about that was indeed VERY impactful during that time. All in all, we learned about the spread of Islam, how the middle East became so advanced, how Europe became so unadvanced, the middle aged, the crusades, the war between France and England and their 100 year war, the immense power gained from, and the idea of certain lifestyles for certain people during that time.
